🎨 Design Description
The reverse pays homage to the historic Spanish Pillar Dollar, also known as a peso or “piece of eight.”
Beneath the inscription “VTRAQUE”, meaning “both are one,” appear the Spanish Crown and two hemispheres representing the Old World and New World.
The composition is surrounded by representations of the Pillars of Hercules, wrapped in spiralling banners bearing the words “PLVS VLTRA”, meaning “more beyond.”
The distinctive S-shaped configuration of the banners around the columns has been suggested as an origin of the familiar “$” symbol.
A special “Mo” mintmark references Mexico City, paying tribute to the tradition of Spanish Empire coins carrying individual mintmarks identifying their place of production. The reverse also incorporates the 2025 year-date.
