Designed by legendary Australian goldsmith and numismatic artist Stuart Devlin, the program celebrated Australia’s most famous natural gold discoveries and helped define the Mint’s international reputation for excellence.

Golden Legacy – Welcome Stranger

Sourced from the Perth Mint archives, the reverse features an unreleased Stuart Devlin design depicting the Welcome Stranger—the largest gold nugget ever recorded. Discovered in February 1869 at Moliagul, Victoria, by John Deason and Richard Oates, the massive 2,284-ounce nugget was so large it had to be broken into three pieces before it could be weighed.

The design is distinguished by a special ‘P40’ anniversary mintmark, marking four decades since the launch of the iconic Australian Nugget program. The obverse bears the official Australian legal tender effigy, along with the coin’s weight, purity, denomination, and 2026 year-date.
