Designed by world-renowned Australian goldsmith and numismatic artist Stuart Devlin, the series celebrated Australia’s legendary natural gold nuggets and helped establish the Mint’s global reputation for innovation and craftsmanship.

Golden Legacy – Welcome Stranger

Pulled from the Perth Mint archives, the reverse design features Devlin’s unreleased artwork depicting the Welcome Stranger, the largest gold nugget ever recorded. Discovered in February 1869 at Moliagul, Victoria, by prospectors John Deason and Richard Oates, the enormous 2,284-ounce nugget was so large it had to be broken into three pieces before it could be weighed.

The design is enhanced with a special ‘P40’ anniversary mintmark, marking four decades of the iconic Australian Nugget program. The obverse bears the official Australian legal tender effigy, along with the coin’s weight, purity, denomination, and 2026 year-date.

With an exceptionally low mintage, this release represents a rare opportunity to acquire a landmark gold coin celebrating Australian numismatic history.
