Welcome Stranger Design

Drawn from the Perth Mint archives, the reverse of this anniversary issue features a previously unreleased Stuart Devlin design, depicting the legendary Welcome Stranger — the largest gold nugget ever recorded. Discovered in February 1869 at Moliagul, Victoria by prospectors John Deason and Richard Oates, the massive nugget weighed an astonishing 2,284 ounces and was so large it had to be broken into three pieces before it could be weighed.

The design is beautifully elevated with selective gold gilding, highlighting the nugget against the mirrored Proof silver field. Completing the tribute are the coin’s inscriptions, weight, purity, year-date, and a special ‘P40’ anniversary mintmark, marking four decades of the Australian Nugget program.
