📖 Story / Theme – Australian Nugget 40th Anniversary

First launched in 1986, the Australian Nugget Gold Coin Program marked The Perth Mint’s return to legal tender gold coin production following the end of sovereign minting in 1931.

Designed by renowned Australian artist Stuart Devlin, the original series celebrated Australia’s legendary natural gold nuggets and quickly became one of the world’s most respected bullion and collector coin programs.

🎨 Design Description

The reverse showcases Stuart Devlin’s archived design depicting the legendary Welcome Stranger nugget.

Discovered in February 1869 at Moliagul, Victoria, by prospectors John Deason and Richard Oates, the enormous 2,284-ounce nugget became one of the most significant discoveries of the Australian gold rush era. Due to its immense size, the nugget had to be broken into three pieces before weighing.

The design is enhanced with a special ‘P40’ anniversary mintmark commemorating forty years of the Australian Nugget program.

The obverse bears the official Australian legal tender effigy together with the denomination, weight, purity, and 2026 year-date.
