Issued in the year Australia and Mexico celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations, this commemorative release looks much further back to the historic connection created by Spanish silver dollars struck in colonial Mexican mints. These coins ultimately played a pivotal role in the creation of Australia’s famous Holey Dollar and Dump.

Struck in aluminium bronze to an Uncirculated finish, the $1 Australian legal tender coin is presented on an official Royal Australian Mint display card.

🎨 Design Description

The coin design features the 1804/1813 Holey Dollar held in the National Coin Collection.

On the reverse, a stylised arrangement of ribbons, flowers and leaves frames the historic Holey Dollar. The composition draws upon decorative elements from the original coin while introducing national floral symbols representing both countries—dahlias for Mexico and wattle for Australia.

The obverse continues the depiction of the Holey Dollar, allowing the historic coin to be viewed from both sides. The King Charles III effigy appears at the top of the coin.
