📖 Story / Theme – Women’s Services During WWII
In 1941, Australia established several women’s auxiliary military services to support the growing demands of the Second World War.
The Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force (WAAAF) became the first women’s service formed in March 1941, eventually expanding to nearly 27,000 members who served in operational, technical, and administrative roles.
The Women’s Royal Australian Naval Service (WRANS) followed shortly after, initially formed to address shortages in naval communications and telegraphy roles.
Later that year, the Australian Women’s Army Service (AWAS) was created to release more men for overseas combat operations, with women serving both within Australia and in New Guinea.
These pioneering services laid the foundation for the eventual integration of women into the broader Australian Defence Force.
